Upcoming events for seniors, others looking for connecting services

There are programs coming up in May that will benefit seniors and others seeking connections in the community that can lead parents, families and the homeless to services that they may need.

On Tuesday, May 1, Join MAC, Inc., in Salisbury for Law Day and talk to an attorney — for free.

The Wicomico County Bar Association will have attorneys available to speak to seniors 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MAC, Inc., the Area Agency on Aging, and to assist them in completing advance medical directives.

The attorneys also will provide consumer financial information and tips on how to avoid common consumer scams, and will be available to discuss other legal issues.

This a free program, but appointments are needed. For more details or to make an appointment, call MAC at 410-742-0505. Law Day is being co-sponsored with MAC., Inc., by the Wicomico County Bar Association and Maryland Legal Aid. MAC, Inc., is located behind the Holly Center off Snow Hill Road, 909 Progress Circle.

On Tuesday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Boards of Education from the tri-county area along with the Homeless Alliance of the Lower Shore are hosting a Resource Day at the UMES Henson Center Ballroom. The keynote speaker will Aaron D. Deal, the 2004 Wicomico County and Maryland Teacher of the Year.

A light breakfast and lunch will be available as participants “get connected” with community resources ranging from home energy programs, utility subsidies, houses expenses, child-care resources, parent support groups and more.

Those participating must register, call the Somerset County Board of Education, 410-651-1616.

Also upcoming, the Somerset County Commission on Aging hosts its first Senior Health & Wellness Fair 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 16 at the MAC Center located behind the Health Department on Sign Post Road in Westover.

Those 60 and older can learn about what resources are available to them during this free event. Vendors and community organizations will be present, and there will be free blood pressure screenings, refreshments and door prizes.
