BALTIMORE — Greenwood Elementary School in Princess Anne now has something else to crow about. Recently its top teacher Melody Power was named a nominee for Maryland Teacher of the Year, and now it is Somerset County’s winner of the 2014-15 School Breakfast Challenge, sponsored by the Maryland No Kid Hungry Campaign.

Statistics from November 2014 through January 2015 were compared to figures for the same period for the prior year and GES had an increase of 8.31 percent in average daily participation (ADP).

For its achievement there is a cash award and a banner that the school can display. A celebration is being planned for the coming days. “[W]e have seen great increases in breakfast participation across the state,” wrote Elise Solorio, the campaign’s breakfast manager. GES Principal Cheryl O’Neal enrolled her school in the contest, and has been a promoter of Maryland Meals for Achievement (MMFA) since it was introduced last fall.

It is because of Somerset County’s high number of students eligible for free or reduced meals that MMFA was introduced at all schools, and it provides for a free breakfast and lunch for all students regardless of family income.

The County Times is delivered weekly to Crisfield and the surrounding Somerset County region.
